Fist off my boss is a woman, and she owns the resturant that I work at. She hired me about 6 months ago as her pastry chef. For the past 3 months there has been no room for mistakes. She will find anything to pick at me for. I dont want to quit because I really like what Im doing but its so hard when no matter what you do its not good enough. Ive never had a complaint from any costomer and yesterday I work 10 1/2 hours for here so that a catering I was doing would be done in time, now Im not complaining but I went in this morning to box up some stuff for some orders and she came right up to me and stared in on me about how my dessert case wasnt full enough, I mean its as if she thinks that I dont work hard. Am I just over reacting or is this something that I should do something about.

I think she'll have more respect for you if you ask her for a moment to talk, and just sincerely tell her how you feel. Tell her you're doing the best you can and your customers are happy. Just be honest with her that she's making you feel "discouraged instead of encouraged". Also, express to her that you appreciate your job. Ultimately, If you show her love, no matter how she is to you, it will put heaps of coal on her head, as my mom always says.

That's life in the food service industry. I worked for five brothers and their father, who would do his weekly grocery shopping out of the walk-in cooler. Its her business and it is going to be run the way she wants it. I know how you feel, they don't care about how hard you work or the little extras that you do.
Put it this way....its easier to criticize that to give a complement.
If you want to keep working in the industry I would suggest getting a thicker skin and not to take it personally.
Keep up the good work!!! =0)

Oh I've been in this situation before. I finally got sick of it and looked my boss dead in the eye and said, "If you can't speak to me respectfully, how do you expect me to respect you? How do you expect me to want to make you money? Quite frankly, your attitude is repulsive and I've done nothing to deserve this." and I walked right out, heh.

No ones attitude is worth it. It's not worth getting up and dreading going to work. You might not want to quit because you like what you're doing, BUT there ARE other bakeries. Leave. Find an employer that is mature enough to treat you with respect.

Find another job. It's very hard trying to change adults. You could find another place where you are appreciated. If that doesn't get you, think of this: that kind of stress is very bad for your health/relationships & will have long term consequences. Is it really worth it? Working with miserable people will make you miserable. My experience is that finding a better job will do the trick.

Good luck. I know it's easier said than done.

May I ask if he reacts the same way with other employees or just you?
