"Dear [editor name],
As part of a school project, I was confronted with [world issue]. In order to gather more dynamic information on the subject, I decided to ask respected members of the community, who are in all probability familiar with this issue, what they thought about it and why?"

that might help you get going. of course you can flower it up and stuff so it doesn't sound so boring, and of course re-word the vocabulary so it matches your own style and such. basically just restate it all in your own words. and believe me, it'll sound better if you do use your own words.

alright, hope that helps, good luck!

How about if you scan some that are in the paper you plan to write to so you can see whattypes of letters people have already written. It will both give you topic ideas and a better idea of the format to use.

Make sure everything is left aligned and start with a date, then hit enter 4 times and start by typing "To Whom It May Concern:" Hit enter another 2 times and start your letter there. Or if you know the editor's name you can start by typing Mr. or Ms. followed by his or her name.

Dear Sir or Madam:

Is a good start, and just explain what you are writing about and what you need from them. Most papers will be more than happy to assist you.

If you know the editor's name, address him as Dear Mr Editor's name/Ms Editor's Name. If you do not know their name, use Dear Sir/Madam OR Dear Jacksonville Journal Editor .... except use the actual name of the paper you are writing to, of course! :)
