So here are the reasons why some think soccer is not a very popular sport in America:
• Americans like interrupted play.
American sports: a very short, very intense moment, then a long break. Take football, for example: each action lasts an average of 6 seconds. Then there is a long break, followed by another short burst of action. Total actual play in a 3-hour football game: about 12 minutes! The 48 minutes for a regular 90 minutes soccer game is too much.
• It’s a team game: Americans prefer individualistic games.
Of course, you’ll tell me that football or baseball are team games. But come on! in football, the team is only there to serve just 4 players: the quarterback, the running back, and the receivers. And each play only features 2 of theses players, at most. Linebackers almost never touch the ball. Sure, they have a role, but it’s a supporting role. In soccer, on the other hand, it’s hard to imagine a situation where several players would not touch the ball for an entire game.
• Americans like game stats: soccer doesn’t have any.
Look at baseball: that’s pretty much all it’s about. Numbers. Americans have to be able to read a box score to make sense of a game. They have to be able to compare games, players, eras. In soccer, most stats are meaningless and therefore not exists. Although that won’t prevent Americans from trying: after the World Cup games on Direct TV, they give you the total number of passes per team, and the accuracy percentage! (For the record, during France-Portugal, Portugal made 79% of 549 passes versus 77% of 395 for France!)
• Soccer is for average-size people
Americans don’t resent the physically advantaged for succeeding, regardless of skills. If a 7-footer scores a basket on a 6’2 player, Americans have no problem cheering them on. Same thing when a 350-pound lineman obliterates a 200-pound quarterback. As size or bulk doesn’t give much of an advantage to a soccer player, Europeans seem to have a tendency to prefer that egalitarian approach.
• Americans love order and precision
Soccer games are not always very precise. Time keeping, for example, is approximate. And free kicks are not always taken from the exact point of a foul. In a basketball game on the other hand, time is kept to the 10th of a second. In american football, inches matter.
• Fair-play
When a basketball player fouls another one hard, he just walks away, and won’t help the other guy get back on his feet. In football, if a quarterback has a hand injury, that’s often where the linebackers will try to knock him down. No such thing in soccer, where players help each other off their feet. When a soccer player is injured, the player with the ball will deliberately put the ball out of bounds. When play resumes, the opposing team will simply give back the ball to the team that had to lose it. Say what you want, but in my opinion, that’s unthinkable in American sports. They would think it’s for sissies!

Then football what? Oh....than! I see to enjoy 0-0, 1-nil results, very little action, no hitting all while watching metrosexuals dive all over the place the minute anyone touches them, you do need to be brain dead. Soccer USED to be good...back in the '70s when goals actually were scored. Not now, I'm afraid, Land of Eng ****.
Tom Brady fat? LaDanian Tomlinson fat? Brian Urlacher fat? Your standards are difficult.
I see you guys in the Not So Great Anymore Britain or Land of Eng still do the limp wristed high fives and have streakers (the '70s were 3 decades+ ago...you guys have color TV yet?).
You have to be athletic to fall over and shoot the ball miles wide like Frank Lampard? Really? As opposed to being Chad Palmer and being able to fling a ball 60 yards pinpoint perfect into Ocho Cinco's arms while he's in stride while guys try to take out your knees, head and whatever body part. I see, you just go ahead like the masses who love the Spice Girls and treacle like hip hop and enjoy that sport you call soccer...sorry, I meant, the metrosexual actvity called soccer. Geez, watch rugby at least, Land of Eng ponce.

I know alot of Mom's that want there son's to play soccer so they wont get hurt...It's a game for sissies that have no real athletic ability...I would rather watch the paint dry then a ridiculous game of soccer...If I wouldn't have been good enough to play football, baseball and basketball I probably would have played soccer...Well I take that back we used to beat up on the soccer players just like we did the guy's in the marching band..

Well I have played soccer my whole life up to college level and played high school football in CIF and I can say both sports can be equally grueling. Soccer is harder cardio wise but football get exhausting because of the hits. Both involve strategy and unless you have played both at a competitive level you really can't comment constructively on either one(regarding low scores etc)..the french comment was hilarious btw...

Only big time wankers like soccer because they can **** during the game and not miss any action because there is NONE! Soccer is about as exciting as watching the grass grow or watching a toad crap! Nothing but a bunch of sissy boys running around like fairies and crying everytime they skin their knees! SOccer is for wussies too weak to play real sports!

First off, putting a question mark after a statement doesn't make it a question. And unfortunately you have to be athletic to play football, plus much tougher than soccer players. If soccer players were real men they'd play rugby. instead of a boring low scoring game. But that's something eurotrash people like you couldn't understand anyways.

Soccer is okay for players who don't like the risk of taking a hard shot. Its okay for those people who are not the physically tough types. Also if you don't like a lot of action soccer is good.

Football allows all types of individuals to play. From tall to short, fat to skinny, fast to slow, etc. As there are many positions in football, many individuals are allowed to play. In soccer, if you can't run, you can't play. Football is a bit more exciting as there is something going on all the time. Peace.
