kind of people, those "Like this one time, at band camp" kind of people, in your life? I'm usually a very tolerant person, but she just left after being over at my house for 6 hours, and my nerves are jangling. How would you NICELY divert a person like that? How would you handle the situation?

Oh, I hate those, and they only come when you're busy. I had one who always said "it would be a kindness if you..." and then asked for something, and sometimes took hours to get around to it. I got to the point I just wouldn't open the door, just say, I'm sorry, I'm really busy right now, and go back to whatever it was you really wanted (or needed) to do. FYI: It's really not safe to open the door or unlock the deadbolt anymore unless you KNOW who's out there!

"WOW! You sure do have a lot of memories of Band Camp! You should put all that in a journal for safekeeping, and then you'd have more space in your brain for your current events. Or, hey! You could write a book! That way, if people really wanted to know about your Band Camp escapades, they would read your book!

I just usually turn into a very boring person until they leave. I stop contributing to the conversation and just say yes, no or I don't know.

As soon as there's a pause in the conversation get up and say "well it's been great chatting with you, but I really need to get to my laundry, cooking, colour code my marble collection...." or whatever. It might seem a little bit rude but so is wearing out your welcome.

Hm, how to get rid of an American who starts to nag.. Gosh. Uhm. That's the problem here in Europe and everywhere else in the world: no one can. I feel sorry for you though, and all other Americans who don't nag.
