You can try roommates.com, but BACKGROUND CHECK, BACKGROUND CHECK, BACKGROUND CHECK. Always background check ANYONE you're considering to share your home with, especially since you have a child. Interview them. Go over the rules and regulations up front. Agree before allowing move in on particular topics such as who does what chores around the house and when. Draft a lease that way you have some kind of binding contract, and I strongly recommend on a 3 month trial period lease first. You never really know someone until you live with them.

I know Craigslist is exactly where you don't get the good ones. I had a friend who was looking for a roommate and ended up interviewing a mess of people . . . all of whom were either flakes or scam artists.

She ended up going through friends to find out that there was someone who needed a place to live and was reliable (VERY important). The best part about going through friends is one may say, "Oh yes, Jane Doe is great," and another might be able to say, "Oh, Jane Doe skipped out on the rent on her last place. She's nice, but not the type of person I'd want for a roommate."

Other than that, I don't know how to help.
