When did this become okay? I don't recall anybody saying it was okay for anybody but black people to use the word. What is your take on this?

***** it isn't ok for black people to use it either. If black folks are going to keep using it, then that means it is still a legitimate word in society. Besides, I never have and never will censor myself for you or for ANYONE. If you don't like it, too damn bad. I refuse to accept your double standard. If you need to, take it up with me personally on the street and I'll stomp you like I have others before. Because, unlike the politically correct american p*ussies out there, I will actually say what I want to your face instead of behind your back. I am an equal opportunity racist and I don't hate black people any more than any other people (several of my exs are black) but I will be damned if I am going to be told I can't say something when other people are allowed to say it. Whore, do you think we are stupid or something?
How about helping the black community abandon the chains that are still holding you down rather than the misguided use as crutches. Heal the wounds rather than keeping them open. Stop using the word n*gger. You can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't glorify the word in your "music and culture" and then expect others who are exposed to that music and culture to not use it too. So stop glorifying it in your two faced way. If you want to be treated as equals in every way, then you have to be able to stop thinking your people are seperate from "us" and you need to understand you are not above reproach.

by the way just a suggestion:
I'd be much more concerned about the growing number of whites that like to call black folks sh*tskins. That is more disturbing than *****r anyday. because you know they aren't getting that from your music...they are getting that from their own hate of black folks.

I think, we as a nation, should all speak proper English, not slang, which is usually how the "N" word is used. Some of the answers i've read, even the educated persons answer, has alot of slang....lazy talk. Degrading someone with the "N" word is never acceptable, no matter what color your skin is. I think that if the black population would stop using the word so casually, then the word would die out in slang. Slavery is over, but will never be forgotten or forgiven, even though, my skin may be white, I would never do that to another person, no matter what color they were. We are a new generation, new people, with new beliefs, and we too, are being descriminated against, for what our anncestors did. Its not fair all the way around. Your families were abused by our families. It wasnt my hands on you, and it never will be. My answer, be a role model, don't use the word yourself, and the rest will follow

Not that im condoning it, but when was it ok for anyone to use it. I dont see why black people call eachother it? Its a derogatory term and if youre calling eachother it then how is it any different for other people saying it. Its called common sense. It is a nasty name with a nasty meaning and no one should be using it peroid. However shouldnt people learn to let things go. Didnt your parents teach you "sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"? I have a lot of black friends that dont understand why black people call eachother that name. They think that its ignorant and I agree it is.

I just dont think anyone should be calling anyone else that regardless of race.

Its like me walking up to another indian and saying "hey whats up towel head" and then getting mad at the person behind me saying it. Come on now!

Lead by example?

First of all, I don't know if you've been in a coma recently but it is not seen as ok for white people to use the n word by any means. I think it looks equally as bad when black people use it, just as when people use excessive profanity, it makes them unintelligent, uneducated, classless etc. Nobody that speaks with slang and profanity will ever be taken seriously.

WHY is it ok for blacks, just african blacks?
The way I see it and hear it is.......when a word is used all the time and I hear it when I listen to black comics or black rappers or just black people on the streets.
If you hear a word often enough it loses it shock value and pretty soon just becomes another word.
So if you don't want white folks using the N word don't make it ok for anyone to use the N word

Yeah, it makes me very uncomfortable every time I hear it even from friends of mine that are black.
Even though they are upper middle class people and you would never expect it to be said in their presents it still comes out once in a while like when watching a boxing mach or a sporting event.
It is mostly the guys that use it too I have noticed.
Women are offended by it much more than the guys are.
His Wife gets really mad at him if she hear him say it and tells him to watch his mouth.
I hate to hear it and I will never use it simply because of the negative stigma associated with it.
Way too much bad history associated with that word.
It makes the person who uses it appear ignorant, not the person that it is used on.

NO ONE should use the "n" word. Not white, black, brown, or yellow. It is a very decorative term that was used to describe some one that was less than human. Blacks were not called housemaids, or yard man. They were called house ni**er or yard ni**er. All a black person does by using the "n" word is show their ignorance and a lack of self respect

Oh, you mean NICE?...

Seriously, this word sounds terrible no matter what color the mouth is that it comes out of. It is rude & disrespectful. I personally do not understand why anyone would want to use this term: especially when it is `black on black.` I am white and I cannot stand to hear this word AT ALL! It does not sound any better when black people call each other by this name. DISRESPECTFUL IS DISRESPECTFUL NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT!

It's NOT Okay for ANYONE to use this word!! Most White people, and people of other races are HUGE fans of Gangsta Rap/ Hip Hop. The Hip Hop image, as well as the N-word, are marketed to the entire world. Why would this surprise you? Black people need to stop using that word. They use it because Black people make it cool and OK.

I never use it. I have Black friends who do, even around me, but I won't say it, ever. For a white person to say it is and always has been wrong. I guess if a Black person wants to say it, its like "reclaiming" or "owning" the word, like gay people I know who use...well, the "Q word" in referring to themselves. It does amaze me every time I hear the N word in a song, kinda bugs me actually, I'd like that word to go away forever.
