it's an interschool competition so it has to be awesome and well known and rocking and cool. we were thinking about respect by aretha franklin but we're up for suggestions.

well, as a guy in a band, and as a guitar instructor....
how many ppl in the band, and what instruments are you guys using? Respect is a great song, but you better make sure you've got good background singers, otherwise the song can sound thin, and your lead singer better be good enough to pull off the song too.
you've got the right idea though, pick a song that everyone knows, that the crowd will really get into, and can sing along to. songs like the Immigrant song (one of my fave Zep tunes) are great, but its a SHORT song, and its hard for ppl to sing along with, and really get into unless they're Zep freaks.
without knowing what your band is made up of, i'd say something like Rock and Roll All Night, or maybe something by the Beatles, which everyone will know immediately, and usually you can kinda take liberties with the songs a little, so if you dont want to play it exactly as its recorded, ppl dont mind as much.

Hmmmm... how about some Jackson 5, thats always fun. You know what would blow em away...your already doing Aretha, do a medly of motown!! everyone knows the motown tunes, or mix 3 of Arethas songs, the work you have to put in to do that will show, it should be a guarunteed win, good luck!!

Blondie's 'Always Touched By Your Presence Dear' works for guitar based bands that's for sure.
If you're not guitar-based then Stevie Wonder's 'As If' or 'Superstition' are good ones to try....
Whatever you do though, try and put your own spin on it...originality even when covering something by someone else is always a plus as it makes you stand out.
