Well, the obvious answer is "yes," but it really does depend on the university.
Some universities are basically tagged as commuter schools - they are usually in a city with a lot of people, they are not typically that difficult to get into, and they would probably be within about 40 minutes of most of the attendees home towns. In that case, living at home would save tons of money each year, and it might not be worth it to move near or on campus because the campus may not have much of a campus life that you'd be missing out on.
But, some universities are very much about the whole "college experience" and to not live close would put a strain on the studies and taking part of typical college life. It simply would not be worth it. In the case you attend one of these universities, it would be best to find somewhere to live either on campus, or within a reasonable travelling distance (either by walking, biking, or taking a quick bus ride). If you move out of your parent's house, and then you STILL have to drive to school, it could end up costing more because parking passes can get expensive - at my school they can cost up to $700 for 2 semesters, so someone would be better off spending that money on the extra rent it costs to live closer.

I don't even know how to put this question in context.
Conceptually, yes, it's a good idea to live close to the university you attend. It makes it easier to commute to the school; you can get there faster; you may feel more involved/committed to the school.
But what about living on campus? Is that not an option?
If you're only choices are near or far, I'd think near would be better. But if near costs 10x more than far, or near isn't a safe neighborhood, well, then I'd have to reconsider that.

Yup, living far away puts you at risk for being late due to traffic, accidents, laziness, car problems.....
