I found a great article but every picture shows a square. My fabric is 44 inches wide and I need a yard and a half. If I went from corner to corner wouldn't it be lopsided?

You can't make it into a square with fabric only 44 inches wide, 1 1/2 yards is 54 inches. One option is to buy fabric that is 60 inches wide. If you have to stick with a 44 inch fabric, it would have to be seamed. An off-set seam doesn't look very good, so you would need to cut two pieces of 1 1/2 yards each, sew them together, fold them in half and then cut the selvage off the opposite side from the fold at 28 inches...opened, that would give you 56 x 56.
