Let's see,
During the American Revolution Britain was the Dominator and Colonists were the dominated group, of course unlike many of these situations the underdogs prevailed.
In the Westward expansion then Early Settlers led by the USC dominated Native Americans, taking much of their land and leaving a trail of broken Treaties and promises.
Then during the Civil War the Union prevailed over the bigotry of the South under the Confederacy.
In all three examples "Imperialism" as you've chosen to label it, was indeed messy, bloody and arguably could have been handled more wisely. Yet ultimately brought forth a better life for all in what is now the Greatest Country in the World. And explains why people still risk everything to get here.
In America today, all minorities only live in poverty and oppression by choice because equal opportunity is undenyably available for all.
Just the other day I heard that American Indian Casino owners here in America recently purchased about 7 Planet Hollywoods across the United Kingdom all for cash.
To answer your question I would say Yes, Imperialism is needed at times for progress.
As in the Middle East today. For Israel, the beacon of Democracy and freedom to survive, their Demon Possessed Foes in the region must be elliminated.
