I think it comes from the advertisers.
We see ads when we're Yahooing. Plus, the more users Yahoo can boast, the more companies will pay to have their ads displayed, because that's more people who will see each ad.
I have trouble believing, though, that this is actually profitable to Yahoo and the advertisers. Same goes for YouTube. It takes a massive amount of expensive servers and maintenance, and it's all paid for by people who HOPE maybe 1% of the customers will click their ad?

by making u sit on the Internet and spend lots of time on here thereby running up ur Internet bills or by having pple like Oprah or Martha graham post questions on here or thru advertisements
