The Animals created a famous version in the 60's but the song is at least 100 years old. According to Wikip...The oldest known existing recording is by Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster and was released in 1934.

The Animals... this band is often confused for Led Zeppelin or The Doors. But it was most definitely The Animals

The Animals had the most famous version - I think it was released in 1964. But my favorite version is Bob Dylan's - he did it on his first album in 1962. He says he learned the song from Dave Van Ronk.

Eric Burdon and The Animals.
Saw a show about Eric and found out that this was his mother's favorite song of his and she wanted him to sing it at her funeral. He thought it was a tad inappropriate at the time, but granted her request.
