Gargling salt water is perfectly safe while pregnant and does work very well. Often it is recommended to use warm salt water. However, I have been plagued with sore throat problems since I was young and years ago a doctor said to use tap water as hot as you can stand without burning your mouth or throat. Keep your environment and yourself well hydrated. Use a room humidifier even if your home or office has one on the furnace. Drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine, and suck on hard candy. All of these things have helped me even when I was pregnant. Also sipping anything hot such as broth, lemonade, or herbal tea works, too. If you have a fever and a very sore throat that hurts all the time and not just when you swallow, you may have strep throat. Get a flashlight and look into your throat in a mirror or have someone else look for you. If you have white spots on the roof of your mouth or in the back of your throat or back of your tongue, these can be signs of strep throat. You may also see a pus-like substance on your tonsils. I get strep throat often and am about 98% correct diagnosing myself before actually going to the doctor.

Salt water is fine.
Call a nurse and ask.
There are lots of teas you can drink that help.
I did this when i had a sore throat pregnant: I first took tylenol, then went and bought some teabags and a couple cinnomon sticks (actual sticks), and lemon. Boil your tea with the one or two sticks and squeeze lemon juice into it. This will greatly reduce that sore throat. As far as your temp, depending on how high it is, i would maybe consider a visit to the ER.

Because you're not swallowing it, salt water should be perfectly fine. Also try hot water, lemon, and honey--it's particularly soothing. Ricola and Throat-Eze are good. Also, consider taking some zinc--it's a great supplement for heading off illnesses or shortening the course of one.
