I have a gateway tower (about 4 years old) and a 2 yr old 50" widescreen tv. Do I need a special connection to make this possible or do I need the Windows Media Center Console?

yes, you can.
Hardware: does the widescreen have a VGA input? If so, get a cable and you're done. Also hit FN F9 to toggle between computer monitor, TV monitor, and both monitors.
If not, you need to get an RF modulator to translate the computer's vga output to the TV's cable input. You can pick these up at Radio Shack for $30 or so. With the modulator, the computer hooks up the same way as a VHS or DVD. Just pick a channel that isn't already in use like 3 or 4.

Yes, hook it up through VGA, S-Video, component or whatever you have. Then on the TV put it on that source or channel. Then on your actual computer go to display properties ( where you change wallpaper & Screen Saver) click on the settings tab. In the settings tab click advanced at the bottom. A new panel will appear and you just click the display tab, then click on the TV display and it will work

the question is...why YOU need to ask someone else
I mean IT is your tv set, right?
so ask yourself if you want to use it as a monitor
anyway...you can use a tv set as a monitor...........
