A gift card to Target. Then, if he gets a ping pong table, he can buy the paddles and the balls. If he doesn't get the table, he can buy music, DVDs, whatever.

sounds like he is really into ping pong. So buy him a "real" set of ping pong paddles. He'll get some when he gets the table but there are better ones out there and he might appreciate some really good paddles. Buy some balls too.

Just give him some money and if he want a ping pong table he will buy it but if he wants something different than he can get it.

It depends on if he is planning to attend college or not. I know my senior year my brother got me a real nice leather backpack so when I started college the following fall it was one last thing I had to buy. Gift cards to whatever college he is attending are also nice.
If you want to purchase a ping pong table for him try looking at a Wal-Mart or K-Mart where they are rather inexpensive. Or go in with your family members to get it.
