Bright red blood just means that the blood is fresh and full of hemoglobin. As you said, sometimes it is bright red, sometimes it isn't. Menstrual discharge can range from bright red to dark dark brown, almost black. Unless you are really weirded out or think something is wrong, you're probably OK.
If you ARE really weirded out, the best thing, for your peace of mind, is to see your physician or gynecologist.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and it is perfectly natural to have bright red blood at first,it changes colour as it comes to its end. I used to have this and i am still alive to tell the tale. The bleeding is caused by the lining of the womb being shed, leaving you with an open like sore, you can liken it to a scab that has been picked, the blood can be bright red. If you are worried see your doctor

When dealing with blood flow from your mendstration you will commonally see two types of blood. The bright red color is new blood and the darker color is from old clots probably coming from the walls of your uturus. The lighter color just means its newer.
