I have been doing this for about 50 years...I have bitten them to and below the cuticle and to the point of pain..once I thought my nail was never growing back cause I bit it so low and it took so long to grow back.

I also bite the skin all around the nail. I get compulsive and do it for hours on end and can't stop. The only thing that helps me stop is putting bandaids on all my fingers.

I have went crazy when the dentist messed up my bite and my teeth didn't meet enabling me to be unable to bite nails as the filling was too high. I am terried if having dental work that potentially messes up my ability to bite nails as this happened before and I go nuts without being able to bite. Biting releases stress for me as I am a highly nervous and anxious person. I have to mention it to 3 different dentists if I feel they will shave teeth too low or fill to high. The dentist I have now has examined my nails much to my embarassment and called over coworkers to look.

I have severe bruxism (one of worse cases of this toothgrinding) and my bottom teeth are nearing the point that my gum is close to coming up between teeth and being higher than teeth. This is very uncomfortable..I am worried if they get too bad or loosen (bruxism loosens teeth) that I will need lower dentures (my insurance does not cover partials) and will be unable to bite nails and release stress and I will become worse in nervousness etc.

If my nail starts showing with any white above it, I get obsessed and need to bite it off. Nails looks awful due to this..

Oh man, I had that problem from childhood- I'd lick my nails after they were cut because the scissors left them feeling raw and funny. Then I started biting, and biting to avoid having them cut by scissors. It's a habit I still have trouble controlling. In my freshman year of college, I filed them into claws, which slanted right stright into my skin, so there was no edge for me to catch my teeth on. But, when a claw breaks and gets rough, I can't help licking and chewing it because it feels funny, and then I wind up biting it off. I'm trying to grow my nails normally now for job interviews, and it's really hard not to bite my nails now that there's an edge I can bite, and I'm impatient with them growing so that makes me want to mess with them by putting them in my mouth.

Oh yeah, and when I was a kid, I bit the skin off my fingertips too. It didn't hurt, I never drew blood or anything, but I could peel off some skin with my teeth, so I'd do that. Now that I'm older, my skin doesn't seem so loose and detachable, so I don't do it anymore.

I do. It's a nervous habit. I've tried to break it, but it just hasn't worked out for me yet. I've done it since I was two. I think it's a pretty normal thing.
