six yards wouldn't be unusual. Depends on how big the person's tummy is though.
And the REAL kilts ( which can cost 600 english pounds by the way) use a lot more than some of the rubbish you see on Ebay.
incidentally the standard length is 24 inches, but you are supposed to adjust the length so that when you are kneeling, the kilt JUST touches the ground. Some of the drunken kilt wearers you see at weddings etc are just an embarrassment.
PS nothing is worn under the kilt. It's all in fine working order!

It's a looooootta yardage. But just like any garment, kilts are made in different sizes to fit different sized people. Most of the yardage, of course, is taken up in all those pleats . I had my beautiful kilt lost when a couple of suitcases got stolen out of my car one time. Still hurts thinking about it.

There's traditional, semi-traditional and casual, and they all differ in the amount of pleats used, for which most of the time, the tartan takes up 7 yards of preparing material wide, by the length of from your waist to the floor in a kneeling position (usually about 21").
Then again, this measurement usually varies by waist size, which like all clothing, you'll need more material for bigger sizes and less for smaller sizes.
