Internet & Computer Security
Sometimes as Ty Beanie Baby collectors we get caught up in our hobby online that we might overlook some important security concerns to be aware of while surfing online. This page will help remind, update or inform you of current computer/internet security, including information on the latest viruses and scams online.

Important tips to remember when shopping online!

• Shop with companies you know. Anyone can set up shop online under almost any name. If you're not familiar with a merchant, ask for a paper catalog or brochure to get a better idea of their merchandise and services. Also, determine the company's refund and return policies before you place your order. A responsible online retailer will clearly post its physical address and telephone number on its website. Use that information to check the business's complaint record with the Better Business Bureau or local consumer protection agency.

• Pay by credit or charge card. If you pay by credit or charge card online, your transaction will be protected by the Fair Credit Billing Act. Under this law, you have the right to dispute charges under certain circumstances and temporarily withhold payment while the creditor is investigating them. In the event of unauthorized use of your credit or charge card, you generally would be held liable only for the first $50 in charges. Some companies offer an online shopping guarantee that ensures you will not be held responsible for any unauthorized charges made online, and some cards may provide additional warranty, return and/or purchase protection benefits. Many banks do not offer the same protection when you use your debit card (those with the MasterCard or Visa logo) online. Also it is not worth the risk using your debit card online, if your card information is stolen can you afford to loose everything in your checking account, even if it is only for 48 hours?

• If possible use a separate credit card for online shopping. This will help you keep track of your online purchases easily.

• A secured Web site can be identified by an image of a padlock at the bottom of your browser window and a Web address that starts with "https" instead of "http". This means your credit card information will be encrypted and protected!

• Passwords: Try to use different passwords for each website you have to sign up for an account on. If your password should become compromised on one site, this will protect your other accounts.

• NO company will send your an e-mail asking for your personal information to be sent back to them via e-mail. This includes your password, Social Security Number, and credit card numbers.

Indeed, once in a while something will go wrong, but that is true even when you are in a store: the wrong amount gets charged, someone steals your identity, etc. Having said that, the way you would be cautious in the mall (like not hand over your card to to a random guy), you need to be equally careful online. Here are some other good tips on how to shop safely online.

By check card you mean credit card? Then yes but I would only use it with a web-site you trust.

Yes, it is safe as long as the "lock" appears in your browser. Also be sure that you are on a website that you know others have used before, just to be safe.

I would say it might depend on the card.
I use a check(debit) card (it has a visa logo on it) for my online purchases and have had no problems with using it.

It all depends on the website.
