Which have you read that you would recommend? I'd like to choose one for book club that is readable, but has some subtance. Probably be best if it was under 500 pages.

I've read a few Pulitzer Prize winners and thought they were all excellent. The only fiction/general title that I remember was Maya Angelou's "Who Knows Why the Caged Bird Sings." Since it's about her life and personal observations, it can't really be called "fiction." It was very good, though.

Two more that I recall are "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson and "A Stillness at Appomattox" by Bruce Catton. These are both non-fiction titles about the US Civil War, and both are excellent. I recommend both and I'm pretty sure all three books I mentioned are less than 500 pages.

The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields. Loved, loved, loved this book. Fascinating. I read it when it first came out and then again this past fall. It is wonderful.
