It is a bit misleading to suggest that John Qunicy Adams was defeated by James Monroe in the presidential election of 1820 because Adams wasn't a candidate. What happened was that an elector from New Hampshire (don't remember his name) voted for Adams for one of two reasons, 1) he wanted the honor of being the only person unanimously elected to the Presidency to be George Washington, or 2) he really disliked Monroe and didn't want Monroe to be president for a second term.

I believe you mean James Monroe. In 1820, James Monroe defeated John Quincy Adams in the Presidential race. Monroe won the election with virtually all the electoral vote, without any serious campaigning.

Do you mean James Monroe by any chance? Was that the date he beat JQA 231-1 in the Electoral vote for president?
