Subaru Forrester- good crash rating- proven AWD system- if you're into that Retro- thing... get a hopped up International Scout- will go anywhere!- I suppose you prefer the high end- Merc- so in that price range I like it best as well- would avoid Rover- (yet they are so damn nice!), BMW---undecided, ANYONE test the new Toyota Fj??.. that's my two cents (automotive economic historian)- thanks for the two points. Happy Hunting
Congrats... Subaru is a fine machine(211,000 miles and counting on mine)- not sure about tax laws ( I assume you are in the UK) The company has gone to great lengths to be more "green" and fuel efficiant- the family will enjoy the room- you'll enjoy the fuel consumption- Hope you never have to test the safety rating!

Just because you're moving to the countryside, why do you need a gas guzzler? Will you be living in the middle of a field, surrounded by streams, swamps, hills etc with not a road in sight?
You say you have 3 kids - give a thought to their future, buy something a bit more environmentally friendly. Try a Toyota Prius which seats 5 easily with plenty of storage space.

Remember Gordon Brown is going to tax these vehicles off the road, so unless you have won the lottery, choose a 4x4 car, plenty on the market.

I live in the country and my dream truck is a Ford F-250 Quad cab diesel. That is just the one I love, but my parents had a Dodge Quad cab 4x4 and loved it. If you are going to get a truck you need a quad cab or a crew, they have the most room.

I have a 2006 Toyota Hilux.
You can seat 5 adults.
Its like a car inside, you can get almost anything in the back(covered if you want),
and if you qualify for a company car it will cost you nearly nothing.

SKODA without a doubt. Excellent value for money, and you don't have to worry about the badge anymore. Managed 35 - 40 mpg in mine. Hope this helps.

If you're going to get a 4x4, at least get a proper one and not a PST (public schoolboy transporter).
Get a Discovery.
