No, do not try to be nice, but always be civil. Everyone will respect you if you are polite in any situation, but not if you act friendly and they detect insincerity.

Well if you want to have a social life and have somebody to talk to when you are feeling down then I would recommend that you should start to be nicer to people.

i have to be nice to my bestfriends wife, i'm not fake, she knows i hate her but i am civil around her. you can make your feelings known and be nice at the same time. to thine own self be true.

if I'm nice to them then yeah they should be nice to me,
they don't have to go out of their way, just be kind & not rude.
