If so, does anybody know the difference in the two? (Is there really a difference?)

Playstation 1 controllers do work in PS2, so it's possible that the extra peripherals like racing wheels will work too.

Is the wheel made by Sony? If it's made by Sony there's a greater chance that it will work in a PS2, since PS2's were designed to be backwards compatible with PS1 games and peripherals -- it just wasn't done well.

If it's a MadCatz or any other third party racing wheel, it may cause problems or not work at all.

The controller plugs on PS1/PS2 *are* the same, enough so that you can plug a PS1 controller into a PS2.

The problems come when the game requires that you have those analog sticks, the two joysticks on the bottom of the controller, since PS1 controllers and peripherals don't have them.
