From the ancient Celtic tradition of lighting bonefires on the longest night of the year. Like most Christian imagery, it is borrowed from other religions.

Christmas lights came from christmas candles. Think about it the old combination for a christmas tree was an evergreen tree plus candles. Can you say fire hazard? So somewhere along the line someone thougt of strings of lights after electricity was invented. We need them because they are festive.

christmas tree originated in Germany. I think Macys started the decorations years later

Maybe it has something to do with the light (star) that the shepards and wisemen followed on the first Christmas.
