I go to a junior college. One of my classmates told me that universities don't count my junior college GPA. He said they only look at it when I apply. So, I be starting out with a 0.0 GPA, right? My current GPA is only 3.3, and I don't want it to accumulate with my university grades.

I just wanted to add that he said it was UC Berkeley.

Each school that you go to reports your GPA for that school -- they never factor in grades from other schools.

When you apply for jobs, they may want your overall GPA -- but if you just report your GPA from the last two years, they will probably not check your community college grades.

If you apply for graduate school, they will want a transcript from every school you went to. If you have a higer GPA from your four year college then a 3.3 in your first two years won't really hurt you much. It isn't a really bad GPA -- and they will be impressed that you improved.

I transferred from DVC to UC Davis, and yes they did look at my GPA, and i was required to have a specific GPA to be accepted. What your friend might mean is that when you look at your final transcripts upon graduating a 4 year university it will only show the courses that you took once you transferred. Make sure to keep your transcripts from your JC, and then you can combine the two to get your final GPA upon graduation.

Some schools do have grade forgiveness like that when you transfer from a junior college to a university. I know that the state system in Florida has something like that, but you would have to contact the university that you are planning to go to to get all of the details and requirements.

No, your GPA will not transfer over. You will begin fresh again. My family has transferred a combined total of 12 times to 12 different schools. None of them carried the GPA over. It's always a fresh start.

However, you may not receive credit for all of the courses when you transfer. You may have to take some courses over again. It all depends on the school you enter. Every school has different requirements.

When you transfer fro one school to another, even if they accept some or all of your credits in teh transfer, your GPA should not carry over.

That's not true. They will pull your grades, and if the criteria are the same they will transfer exactly. i.e, both schools use the same grading systems and credit systems.

I believe your friend is incorrect, and I would check with my advisor. He or she will be able to explain it to you. All the best.
