I can eat pigs...they are approximately the same intelligence of dogs. I can name a pig and do just about everything I can with a dog...except maybe play catch with a frisbee. So why can't I eat a dog? I know there are laws separating the animals into different categories, but I don't understand the reasoning for the law. Why are the two animals treated differently?

NOTE: I'm talking about the U.S. and not other countries...

It's tradition. Most countries' laws are rooted in their religious or cultural belief system. While eating dog is forbidden here, Middle Eastern countries outlaw eating pork. Also I've heard that cows are sacred in India and Big Macs there are actually made of lamb. Obviously there is no logical scientific reason why any animal should be eaten or not eaten, merely social pressures.
