A girl I work with is a really good friend of mine. Love her to death. But, recently my supervisor told me that even though it was out of my control, to tell my friend to stop "visiting" me so much and gabbing. I see my supervisor do the same exact thing all the time. So, as nicely as I could, I told her what my supervisor had said. We were both so mad that my supervisor was being a hypocrit, so after work, that day, we were seen talking and the next morning her supervisor told her that we could only talk on breaks and at lunch. Which is fine, but my friend still comes over and talks to me like twice a day other than break and lunch. I don't want to hurt my friend, but I don't want to get in trouble again! What do I do??

You need to tell your friend that you two are both at work and that no matter or not whether you agree with your boss' actions - you need to respect his orders, after all he is the boss. Tell her you wish you could chat more often, but she needs to stay away from you right now; they are definitely watching you and you do not want to push it. If she continues to come to your desk - make like you have something urgent you need to deal with and grab any paper and walk away until she goes back to her area. Look like you have stuff to do and are too busy to pay attention to her. However, make an effort to establish after work in the parking lot, or where ever to "vent". However, "venting" can be dangerous with work situations, especially if you two work in the same company. Try to get away from it, that way you don't get yourself in any more trouble. Especially if it is a job you like, generally. Remember, bosses everywhere are people too and they have a job to do too. They are not doing it to be jerks, they are trying to keep the office productive and void of any distractions. I see nothing they have done wrong, you are at work.

You could say exactly that: "I know the supervisor is being a hypocrite, but really. I don't want to get in trouble again, and I don't want you to get in trouble either. We really should only talk during breaks and lunch".

Also, as much as it does suck that your supervisor does exactly what he doesn't want you to do, (s)he only wants you to work. Chatting generally isn't appropriate in the workplace, because instead of socializing, you should be doing your job. (But yes, it does suck that your supervisor does the same thing. How is (s)he supposed to get his/her job done?)

You HAVE to listen to your supervisor, even though she is also doing the wrong thing.
