I don't think most people do assume this- I am quiet and most people assume I'm shy. I'm not shy- but don't really care if people think I am. I don't have a knack for chit chat, and don't really care about small talk. If people make negative assumptions about people they don't know- it's their loss and your gain, since they won't pursue knowing you better, and you likely wouldn't want them as a friend anyway.

I have never thought that about laid back quiet people. Usually conceited people act like they are the best thing on earth and want to show it so they aren't usually very laid back and quiet.

I'm going to blame that on the insecurity of the people who are assuming you are quiet or laid back, especially if they are behaving badly.

Be as choosy as you like about how you act and who you hang out with. Remember, you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas!

If someone is shy or laid back, he or she will give a shy smile at least. If someone doesn't smile at all and appears to keep themselves to themselves, that's a sign of conceit.
