Many new Democrats elected ran on moderate or conservative platforms. But many say the Democrat leadership is liberal.

So, will the election of the Democrats result in more "liberal" immigration laws? Or not?

Yes, Bush and many Republicans already favor loosening the laws.

To the extent the American electorate does not, what are they to do?

My biggest concern is that the McCain/Kennedy senate immigration bill will be passed. This bill is essentially another backdoor amnesty. The stumbling block before was that it wouldn't pass the House. Whether or not new Representatives elected will vote for this bill remains to be seen, but if it does pass the Congress, Bush will sign it because it is exactly what he has been lobbying for all along. However, having that said I think it would be dishonest to say that just because we have Democrat control of Congress that they will act in a liberal manner towards immigration. As you said many elected were moderate in their views and a majority of Americans, no matter what their political leanings are against this type of reform.

I doubt if anything will change until we have a new president because the president can always veto any law the congress passes that he doesn't like.

First of all the Mexican immigrants are here to stay. No matter what new laws are enacted, Mexicans will continue to make their way here. So be it.
