Since the moon trips achieved distances of approximately .25M miles one-way, and the shuttle altitude is approximately 150 miles one-way, then why don't we just go all the way to the moon?

Or have I missed something critical? What do I need to know about this to have it make sense?

250,000 miles and 150 miles is a big difference. I guess it would be possible though if they carried the material needed to survive it.

The higher you climb, the more energy you need to expend. The shuttle does not carry enough fuel to "climb" all the way to the Moon.

In its present configuration, it could probably reach orbits of 500 miles (800 km) above Earth's surface and still come back safely. The Moon is 700 times further.

The Space Shuttle carries its fuel in the external tank. That fuel is expended completely and the external tank is jettisoned. While in orbit, the Space Shuttle can manuver using the Orbital Manuvering System (OMS) engines. The OMS engines are powerful enough for the shuttle to change orbit and to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere, but not nearly powerful enough to allow the Space Shuttle to leave orbit and head for the moon.

It takes more fuel to go to the Moon. The shuttle only uses enough to get into orbit, not leave orbit. Plus the shuttle does not have the capability to go to the Moon. Not enough oxygen or fuel. And it cannot land there.

The shuttle can not carry enough fuel to get to the moon and still carry a landing craft and all the supplies needed. It was not designed for that mission.

The shuttle must weigh hundreds or times the weight of the Apollo capsule. It can't carry enough fuel to get there.

we have to THRUST to come back ( and minor things like life support - in orbit they can come back in an emergency )
