It is always good to have a state identification card of your children in case you have to prove they are yours or if they get snatched away.

It's not necessary but I think it's worth it. I personally got a ID card from my local DMV for my son (at 6 weeks) which was only ten dollars before I took a few flights. I'm getting another and final ID now that he's turning a year. Call me paranoid but I just feel we can never be too prepared for anything! While it's not required, I guess I just feel more safe having something for him in case of an emergency. If you don't have the money or time--don't worry about it. Best of Luck!

I have traveled with my child since he was 2 months old on planes across the US. Every 3 months. The only time I ever used his birth certificate was when I flew with Southwest Airlines. The need it for check in only to give you the boarding pass. I dont think American Is affiliated with Southwest.

Not within the US, but generally it's a good idea to have a passport, as it will contain your baby's photograph. Birth certificate is not a picture ID. You can get all necessary info below.

I never need any for my two boys. I called b4 and they told me that they didn't ask for Id For any one who appears under the age of 18. I have heard of people who have problem with a child who was going to ride on their parents lap that look older then two. But your is only 4 months. I would still bring the birth certificate to be on the safe side. Have a safe trip!

I was told no when I flew with my son at thre months, but that was a year ago. Call the airline you are flying with's customer service number and they will tell you everything you need to know, that is what I did.

Why don't you just bring both just in case you need both.Other then that I'm pretty sure you don't have to bring any other id.If you still feel you need to but not sure ask some people who have flown with a 4mouth old before.Good Luck!

just take his/her birth certificate when flying. most likely they won't even check it when the baby is obviously so young... (infants fly free under 2 on most carriers it is 2 i think) then when you are checking in for the flight say you are flying with an infant and they'll ask for the childs name, and you're good to go

You shouldn't need anything. I've been flying with my six year old since he was 4 weeks old. We fly at least twice a year. We have never needed anything. I mean, i think it would be silly to make someone bring birth certificates...who says the child you bring is that child on the birth certificate???
I wouldn't worry too much about it. You could make a copy just in case, but I haven't had to yet!
Have a good trip!!! (and don't worry about the looks you will get when you board the plane, it always makes me chuckle to see the people freak out and roll their eyes. I can't wait this year since my youngest is one now, and quite the terror. But my 6 year old does great!!
