basically u gotta sing the song out and try and get ur melody and style and find a chord that fits your lyrics and your melody. Pretty hard I know but once you have an idea of how the song should sound just start finding the bass notes thats exact to your sound/lyrical sound and from the bass note you'll birth the chords...

What kind of songs....happy, sad, angry....it all depends on the mood of your song. And by the way if you only have lyrics you don't have a song, you have lyrics - music is what makes a song a song! It;s not as easy as you may think!
