My friend has been called up for jury duty (UK). As she is currently part way through her teaching degree, by attending the jury service she will fail her course and have to re-do the entire year. She has explained this to the jury people (as has the headteacher she answers to) but they have refused to do anything.
The thing is, I was called up a few years back and I had the option to defer the service on the basis that they could recall me anytime in the next year and I would be unable to defer again. But they aren't allowing her to do this.
Is there anything she can do? It's stupid of the Government to say we need teachers but then delay the training of one by a year for no good reason.

I like the Tinittus idea, but then they might wonder why she has managed to teach a class of children the day after (and if she doesn't she fails again :) ).
It's been suggested she turn up looking like a bit of a slapper so that they never put her on a jury and send her home instead :)

i deffered in the past. what happened with me was that my employer phoned up the clerk of court and explained that due to staff shortages he could not possibly spare me and amazingly they agreed to defer.
it is true however that you cannot defer again and will be called within the year.

Perhaps she could make this offer.
When she has qualified and is working as a teacher, she offers to give up any part of the 3 months+ holiday that she will be getting and do a bit of charity work inbetween whiles.
We all have to do our civic duty, why should the teaching "profession" be any different. Perhaps she could approach her own organisation and arrange something with them to defer her exams or whatever.
Another option would be to put a house brick through a jewellers shop window! I don't think they call convicted criminals!

you're obliged to ensue. There must be an place of work at your court docket residing house the position you could bypass to ensure no matter if you'd be required to do jury responsibility. Take the noticeyou received with you. they provides you with a style to fill out including your causes for not wanting to do jury responsibility and this is going to likely be reviewed. Then they are going to both inform you what to do or deliver you yet another word.

The teacher training establishment should have a policy regarding jury duty. Your friend should speak to her tutor urgently and find out the situation.
Your friends situation is probably covered on the jury service website http://www.cjsonline.gov.uk/juror/summoning/deferral/index.html
I hope this helps

I'm not sure as a student teacher, but I know a teacher who was able to defer jury duty by pointing out that it would be detrimental to her class - perhaps your friend could try this?

The university she is training at should have a policy regarding jury duty. Your friend could speak to her tutor & find out the situation regarding what else they can do to influence the decision. Personally I agree it is totally stupid to stop her from qualifying.

I think your friend should be in touch with her MP to make representations on her behalf to be excused. Anyway having done jury duty I should think she will be let off as on the first day I was in court people were excused for less reason than your friend.

Tell your friend to go to the doctor and say she has ringing in the ears(Tinnitus) Get her to tell the doctor she can't concentrate because she can't hear properly. Then get him to give her a letter for the court. Never fails

I've deferred it in the past, I can't remember if I had to give a reason or not though.

Depending on the nauture of the case, and when challanged as a 'proper juror', she ought to volunteer as the executioner, as she is of the opinion that all criminals, petty thieves to killers ought to strung up, especially blacks, jews, liberals, italians and french people.
Trust me, she will not serve.
