What I mean to say is, when you were training, did you specify in a genre, or learn all genres. If you learned all genres does your voice change when you sing for a different genre or did you have to practice in a different way, I.E. Classical vs Folk vs Jazz.

The reason I'm asking is because I plan to take voice lessons, I play guitar but know nothing about singing, I can play in all genres but prefer to play is Rock Or Folk, so would it be important to find to train in a certain way? I like the sound of a raspy folk muscian or a groaning rock yell, can that be taught?

I have been studying voice for 10 years total. The best voice teachers will train you in the "Classical" or "Operetic" technique. I would suggest learning this way first.

My fear, as a pop/blues singer was that the "soul" would get taught right out of me. BIG misconception. It's your responsibility to derive what you are taught and apply it to the genre you want to sing. Pick out the inflections in all genres that you listen to as well. Remember, the more genres you can perform, the more genres you can work in. The raspy sound will come, if it's in your voice. Don't try to force it. You may find after training for a few months that your natural "chest" voice sounds better than that raspy sound. I know how you feel, I was envious of singers with those great rock voices. But I tell you, the grass always looks greener...I'm sure alot of raspy singers wished they could switch back to a clear voice sometimes.

The best thing to do is get vocal training period. If you know how to breath and support your voice correctly, you can sing anything without destroying your voice. I had a wonderful voice teacher. The concentration was on classical, but only because that really makes you use your full range and learn to support it throughout. In other words, instead of worrying about a genre, particularly since you are new to voice lessons, focus on finding a really good voice teacher.
