My grandmother said she took it when she was pregnant with my mom, she took it to get labor to start, she wasn't having any contraction and water wasn't broken, but for her it did not work.

I used castor oil to start my labor, 26 years ago on Nov 11. It worked and my labor was so severe, that within 45 minutes I had a bouncing baby boy -- in the front seat of my car. Do I regret it? Not on your life - I was 2 weeks overdue and going nowhere fast. My mother-in-law told me about it and she said, it may not work, but sometimes it does. She had also tried it. It is the cramping associated with using a laxative that causes your labor to induce. Do I recommend it? No -- looking back it could have ended up horribly.
I don't know if "traditionally" it was used or not. I cannot imagine it aiding childbirth other than to induce labor. How much? I have no idea. I took the entire very small bottle and chased it with juice.

Traditionally castor oil was used to induce labour, but research has shown that castor oil does not make you go into labour quicker, medically it is not recommended it can make you ill. The best way to induce your labour is to have sex. This is because the penis stimulates your cervix just as if the midwife was to give you a membrane sweep and seamen contains a natural prostaglandin which again if you were to be medically induced your hospital would give you a dose of prostaglandin vaginally. So have sex before your waters break as afterwards can cause infection and stay in bed for at least 1 hour afterwards.

Yes it was. My mom was induced with Castor Oil with two of her children. I induced my last baby with Castor Oil ... he was two weeks over-due. The doctor was going to induce on the Monday, and I knew induction by Oxy would hurt a lot more ... so, I tried Castor Oil on the Friday. It worked.
I used Castor Oil TO INDUCE ... not to aid labour/delivery. I only took 250ml (although 500ml is recommended) but, it still worked. I drank it with a glass of orange juice. Diarrhea and weak contractions started within 4 hours. When I went to the hospital, I was already 4cm dilated.
If your baby is not over-due, just let the little one be ....

Castor oil can be used to start labor. It is less invasive than some of the techniques that they would use in the hospital to start labor. It is also not very pleasant. It can cause severe cramping and diarrhea. It should never be used to start labor without consulting your health care provider either. They would be able to tell you the proper dose to use.
Every woman that I have talked to who used a castor oil induction regretted it afterwords.

Yes, in the old days it was used. But today doctors have developed new and safer ways of bringing on labor. Listen to your doctor. The baby will come when he/she is ready. If your doctor finds that you or the baby will be in danger by prolonged pregnancy, they will schedule an induction, which is much safer and can be monitored by the health staff at all times. If you do choose the route of taking the castor oil, and if it doesn't bring on your labor, all you're gonna get out of it is a miserable case of diarrhea.

My sister's midwife had her taking it to help bring on labour....it worked for her. (this was just two weeks ago)
My Mum did the same thing with her second child...
It's something that helps bring ON labour. Not to help actual labour that's already begun....at least as far as I know.
