He is a good guitar player, he has a fender electric, an alvarezz (sp?) acoustic, but I think he wants an acoustic/electric. What would be like the dream guitar as far as that goes?

Don't buy an Ovation, they sound awful unplugged! Depending on your price range, I would recommend a Martin - DCX1E, That should set you back about $650, but that baby sounds crisp and clean, with a nice bassy tone, and sounds just as good unplugged as plugged in. If your willing to spend more get him a better Martin. The best guitar brands, hands down would be Martin or Taylor, when it comes to Acoustic Electrics, or just acoustics in general.

If you can't afford a nice guitar, I wound't bother buying one for him at all, as the nice guitars are expensive, and why would he want to play a cheap one when he already have two decent ones? In this case, consider buying him any of the following: effects pedals, a guitar strap with his name on it (or favorite band), a travel amp, or a good guitar case for his acoustic. A dream guitar can cost upwards of thousands of dollars.

The 3rd answer got it pretty much right, save for one thing. if you are going for the accoustic/electric, make sure that when trying different guitars, make sure your man plays them through an amp that is very similar to the one he already owns. Differences in electronics, whether solid state or tubes can make a huge difference in the tone of the guitar. you want to avoid having it sound awesome at the store and being disapointed at home when the tone is not the same through a different amp.

Ovation puts out some really good acoustic/electric style guitars just take him out shopping for his guitar and let him play them all till he finds the right one.
