You can look at http://www.consumersearch.com/ for some research. I purchased a Sears Guacamole Kenmore Upright Bagfree Vacuum
Sears item #02036722000 Mfr. model #36722. I have purchased more expensive ones but so far this one has lots of suction and is easy to clean. I have 3 cats and a dog and it cleans pet hair well.

We have a Kirby G4. And 3 dogs, one a chow that sheds horribly and we've had it for 11 years now. So it's still working great.

Try a rainbow cleaning system if they are still around. Nothing beats the water filtration on that. pet hair, dust, dirt. it works great.
