The fireplace should have a switch, maybe a light switch, that will turn it on. Depending on the age of the fireplace, it may require the pilot light to be manually lit. The problem may also be that the gas to this applicance has been turned off, or if run on a propane tank, you may be out of gas.

Turn gas on, turn pilot light knob to pilot, press spark lighter till pilot lights. turn knob to on, turn wall swithch to on, fire should light
