An iPod is the name of one of the brands of MP3 Players (and overpromoted/more expensive, and besides, they are not that durable -- the one I purchased did not last as long as the Toshiba Gigabeat I have now).
YOU do NOT subscribe to a service to use an MP3 Player -- you can download your current CD collection to your desktop/laptop computer (through the Windows Media Player Program for example) -- this is called ripping the disc ... and once it is ripped, then you can SYNC your MP3 Device to your computer that you just ripped the music to -- and choose to download whatever you want of the ripped music.
SOME do purchase music off the internet or a service -- it is NOT mandatory.
Personally, I am very choosy (and don't like the music nowadays -- I'm more of a classical listener), so my CDs work just fine -- and they sound wonderful on my MP3 Player.

There isn't a mp3 player out there that is easier to use then the Apple iPod. I only dislike it because it has proprietary format songs and it is harder to load mp3 songs to than other. I own the 4G 60 GB version and love it. Playing right now.
Other players are better for video. The new Zune has a larger screen but not sure how it works as an MP3 player.

An ipod is just the name of an mp3 player (Apple is the manufacturer). You do not have to subscribe to a satellite radio service. You do have to subscribe to some sort of internet music service in order to download music.

An Ipod is just a fancy mp3 player. Honestly, I don't know what the hype is? I think the style of it is boring and there are many other that are more aesthetically pleasing. They do the same thing... play songs.

An i-pod is just an mp3 player. I hate the ipod brand. It is the worst in my opinion. I would recommend another brand.

It's only a mp3 player. You don't have to subscribe to it.

It holds alot of songs, lots of photos, plays videos, it is kind of like the Zune but it doesn't play the radio or send files to other ipods. I'm listening to my ipod right now. I use ITunes and it downloads songs for $0.99 a song. It's a great program!
