Depends on what he's into. I've found a lot of neat male gifts at Think Geek. It's mostly a store for people who like.. geekier things like technology and computers, but a lot of their products are cool and appeal to everyone :)

Think about what he likes and what his hobbies are. Possibly something related to a hobby. Gift certificates to coffee shops and restaurants are always good. A nice bottle of a special liqueur or brandy that he likes is also good. Consider something for his car, if his car is special to him.

You didn't say how much you want to spend on him, but those little ipod clips (they're TINY, and hold a few hours of music) are only 65 dollars and who wouldn't say "awesome" to get one of those?
If that's more than you want to spend, I like Lola's idea (right before me) about the movies. I just gave her a thumbs up.

gift baskets are nice for a single guy.
microwave popcorn. cup of soup, nuts, cheese and crackers, you know something that shows you know he needs someone to take care of him then he can think of you when he uses each item. Yet it doesn't say I want to jump you now.

a gift card to his favorite store, or a cd of his favorite band, or a DVD of his type of movie. But don't make it too obvious!

Give him a "Redeem for one free favor" coupon. That'll put the ball in his court, and then you'll know.
