The other tenth is no one knowing if its really yours or not. Thats why some people go too court.

The other 10th is having a piece of paper which states that you are the owner..

Buying a car (or something) for cash from someone, does not necessarily mean you own it.

If the car was being bought through some form of financial agreement, then the car is owned by the institution which loaned the money to the original buyer.

If, for example, the car was stolen when you bought it in all good faith, makes you the loser ~ even though you have the car (until removed by the police) in your possession, your nine-tenths counts for nothing.

It is an advantage a person can have short of actual right. The 'nine points of the law' have been given as:-
(1) a good deal of money,
(2) a good deal of patience,
(3) a good cause,
(4) a good lawyer,
(5) good counsel,
(6) good witnesses,
(7) a good jury,
(8) a good judge, and
(9) good luck

Note The quote is Nine points of the Law not Nine tenths of the Law

Actually, the saying was originally that possession is nine POINTS of the law.

It's not a reflection of actual law in any country or legal system: it's just a reflection of the common sense position that the person in possession of something is - if no-one can prove otherwise - the owner.

For instance, look at the USA and Iraq. The USA "possess" Iraq, and that means they can pretty much do what they like - they are the de facto rulers - and International Law at least is, it seems, quite powerless in comparison. What it amounts to is quite similar to "might makes right".

It just means that the 1/10 is probably the chance of you being innocent. The 9/10 means that whether you originally stole "it" or not, you most likely have knowledge that the "it" is stolen....leaving only 1/10 that you did not know.
