I don't like dancing. I never have and I never will. I do it purely as a social custom. But nonetheless it is somethiing I will have to learn even if I don't want to. The more attractive the woman is, the better dancer you have to be. That's pretty much the truth.
I'm not looking for salsa etc.., just a "basic dance techniques" DVD.

Look in here if you find something that appeals to you:
www.dancesport.uk.com
The instructional videos they have are good in quality. Unfortunatelly, random stuff that comes up on a search engine is pretty um, random.

I know you will say "no, i didin't ask for ballroom or latin" but then what are you going to base the leaning on? Every club is slightly different, dancing changes with fasion. But if you get the foundations right you will be able to dance at any club.

I don't think there is any "basic dance techniques". But there might be a DVD on basic techniques for a) Ballroom dancing or b) Nightclub dancing (the two distinct varieties).

While Tango and Waltz fall under a), Salsa and Two-step is under b).

I hate dancing too, but had to take lessons for better success in the romance dept. Now I am a reasonable skilled dancer

Basic ballroom for beginners will start you on some good fundamentals that will also apply for salsa and most other partner dancing. Leave your preconceptions behind; what you get in beginning ballroom is NOT what you see on TV.
Good partner dancing requires a good frame; that is, your shoulders need to stay still, so if you might be called on to pop & lock, that's the antithesis of good partner dancing. You may want something in the hip-hop line as a balance, but since it's street dance without generally recognized standards, the quality of the products will vary wildly.
Lots of places to go, but a good place to start is the DanceScape website.

If you have a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory DVD, you can learn to dance like an Oompa Loompa. They have some great moves. The women love it. Hahaha.

I think you should consider learning two dances at the minimum. A slow dance and a fast dance. The rumba is an easy slow dance, and the swing would be a "basic" faster one.
