The so-called "gay panic" defense is just another way of blaming the victim.
Should Gwen Araujo have been more honest and open about the genitalia she was packing? What about Brandon Teena? Or would others have accused them of "flaunting" their transsexualism?
People generally don't want to hear about it, so it's kept quiet. But then, when something terrible happens, people think the victim was "deceptive." Gimme a break!
I don't know what Gwen or Brandon should have done. I wasn't in their shoes. I notice, though, that it's easy for others to look back and speculate how the victim might have averted catastrophe - as though it were somehow their responsibility.
Cause and effect? Yeah, I guess the decisions we make are important. Gwen and Brandon could have chosen to associate with better people and probably none of this ever would have happened.
But the moral responsibility for their murders falls squarely, and solely, upon the shoulders of the bastards who murdered them. End of story.

I think Gwen's death was very tragic. However, I have the same questions/doubts that you do. This person was playing with fire by passing themselves off as a woman to these men. I would be incredibly upset in their position also, and feel very betrayed. I don't think I would kill anyone over it, but I agree: Gwen was playing with fire, and didn't act in a thoughtful or responsible manner. S/he lied to these guys, and lied in a manner that would hit any straight guy right to the bone.
Just for Krazy Libra- I don't think they tried to rape Gwen, from what I've understood of the case. I might be wrong, but from what I understand Gwen was all for it, and initiated contact on his/her own.

A lot of men are like landmines. I think it's disgusting to kill someone because you found out she was a he. They let pride get the best of them! A lot of men don't want to be known for feeling up another man!

This is a tragic event and the thing that bothers me more is the defense that these men will use. I hope the jury doesnt buy it and they put them away for years.

Reminds me of this lazy drag queen in Saginaw Michigan,Ariel Forbes, real name, Eric Bernard Welch, he would go out and pick up straight guys and and act like a female and perform sex acts on them and they would find out that "she" was a he, and 9 times out of 10 they would beat the crap out of him for lying! Moral is.....Tell the truth about what and who you are! Sad that Gwen was killed but the truth could have kept her alive!
