Yes, he was a real person, but I don't lknow abou this head being pickled. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra, a town in what is now Turkey. He had the reputation of being very generous, and would secretly give monetary gifts to those in need. According to one story I heard, he would throw purses of money in through the windows of people's homes when everybody was asleep. (This was in a warm climate, and they didn't have glass windows.)
So, after his death, he was considered a saint for his kindness and generosity, and is the patron saint of gift giving. Since Christmas is also associated with gift giving (Jesus being the gift of God the Father to take away our sins and the wise men aso gave gifts to Jesus) St. Nicholas became associated with Christmas. His feast day is December 6, IIRC, and some people give their Christmas season gifts then, leaving Christmas Day itself for worship.

Yes he was. He born in Turkey in the early 4th century & became the Bishop of Myra. Later in his life he moved to southern Turkey to a Island now called St. Nicholas Island near Fethiye. It was early visiting Dutch sailors that came to Turkey that made him a Christmas gift giver & it all spread across the world from Holland.
Never the about a pickled head though.

The St Nicholas I know was a man who helped the poor, and all. I think white? My St Nicholas, is not santa clause. Nor is St Patric green beer. And St Valetine is not just candy and sex. As far as I know Valentine was put in prison, but people would come to his window and he would still marry them.

YES. He was a bishop in Turkey that would pass out money to poor families with daughters so they would be able to get married and not forced by necessity into prostitution. Back then you were considered a " fallen woman" if you were seen with a man other than your father or brother.
