I'm not really close to them (hence the acquaintance status) so I can't really give any more details. I'm just looking for an appropriate gift for a 1 year old boy.

since you are only acquaintances, a fun, inexpensive gift would be best. A small playground ball is a great gift for a one year old - or even the larger ones you see at the grocery store/drugstore. Maybe one with one of the popular cartoon characters on it.

At one kids are just learning to walk and navigate. It can be so much fun just rolling the ball back and forth with a toddler. A bright ball or one with any of the early morning characters would be great - that is when the preschooler cartoons are on -- characters from playhouse disney, nick jr, noggin, pbskids and sprout networks.

Stuffed animals are always a good bet. Bears and dogs are good bets for boys. Be careful to check the facial features of the stuffed animal - they don't need to be separate, like plastic/glass eyes etc. - nothing that can come detached. (choking hazard).

As a mother of 2 year old twins, boy/girl, I know that my son got some really nice books for his birthday last year. Good Night Moon needs to be replaced as they have "loved" it to pieces, literally. Besides, books are great at any age.

Anything LeapFrog. My daughter had a drum, a ball with the alphabet, and Baby Tad that she loved all of them. They are also very durable.

bath toys are usually a good bet. My daughter loves 'em and parents usually think its good too because a lot of kids don't completely enjoy bathtime. Someone gave my daughter a cute bucket with her name on it filled with little foam bath toys and a cute robe to match....

go for a basic always set of all time loved toys, a set of colored, different shaped wooden blocks and for more fun add some toddler shaped(sized) cars/trucks or animals

i think you should keep it simple such as a big dump truck filled with those gigantic legos, he really gets 2 gifts instead of one and he will have lots of fun.
