Babies do not need anything other than formula or breast milk until they are 6 months old. There is plenty of water in formula and breast milk for a baby's needs. Giving a newborn water only serves to fill up his tiny tummy and makes him less likely to eat the formula or breast milk that he needs. Because an infant's kidneys are still immature, too much water may not be excreted well and cause a problem with the levels of sodium and potassium in a baby's system. Unless the doctor recommends water for a medical reason, it is not necessary. If it is needed, it is best to boil tap water first and then let it cool or use bottled water until your baby is 6 months old.

You should not give your newborn water unless your pediatrician recommends it. As others have stated, your baby should be sufficiently hydrated as a result of the breast milk and/or formula he is drinking. Further, giving water to your newborn can, in fact, cause harm; his kidneys are very immature and he may have trouble excreting additional water you give him. If given too much water, the concentrations of sodium and potassium in his bloodstream could become unbalanced. Another reason for not giving water is that, while it won't provide nutrition for your baby, it will cause your baby to feel full, causing him in turn to drink less breast milk/formula (which is what nourishes your baby, after all).

It's not that it's never warranted, but speak to your pediatrician first.

NO. You only give a baby formula or breast milk. The litature says you can give the baby water after 4 months but only a little bit. The formula has enough nutrients that you do not need to give the baby anything else.

Why would you want to? If you are breast-feeding, your baby is getting the best nourishment from you. And if you are using powdered formula you are already mixing the powder with water. The doctor's say no, absolutely not. It won't hurt them if you do give them water, but they don't need it.

My first question is why do you want to? Your baby needs formula or breast milk. However, you can also give him small amounts of bottled water. Regular water (tap water) has chemicals in it that your son does not need and probably cannot digest. Too much water can fill your son's tummy and cause him to not want his formula/breast milk and then he won't get the necessary vitamins and such that he needs.

You have a lot of misinformation in some of these answers. I think the correct answer is NO, because it might fill him up and make him not feel hungry. He could become malnourished. In addition, sugar water for hiccups is a wives tale! Please check with your doc or nurse, as he's so young you don't want to go by the uninformed people answering your questions!

It depends on the quality of your water and the condition of your plumbing. I would seriously consider a filter. We are all fine and our parents fed us tap water but we are finding more reasons not to all the time; trace lead builds in our systems, residual contaminants. And yes! feed your baby water, especially if you put the baby to bed with a bottle-make it water so it doesn't ruin her teeth. Also warm water may help if the baby is colicky. It will be comforting and you certainly don't want to over feed with formula. Good luck.

Yes you can give him water....My baby is 3weeks old and our Dr. told us too to help with his constipation....Only give him like 2 oz's but yes...and for all of you that have said NO don't do it, what exactly are you mixing the powdered formula with?

Go ahead it is water and will not hurt him.....

No, do not give him water. Give him breast milk or formula. Newborns' stomachs can't handle very much plain water. Ask your doctor which formula you should use if you cannot breast feed.
