I was on birth control regularly for about ten months. Then I got really sick and stopped taking them for almost a month and a half. Then I started them up again. How long after re-starting should I use a back up method?

The instructions generally say 3 months. If you are really adamant about not having children I wouldn't chance it by cutting that short at all. And remember, even then nothing is 100% effective, unfortunately.

One month after you start taking the pills should be enough.

Why don't you try the IUD that doesn't emit a hormone? No physical side effects other than occasional spotting. My wife LOVES it.
