I build my own systems and install my own OS's. I have everything I need to make the switch. I was just wondering if anyone had any suggestion on how to go about doing this without having to do a complete reinstall of all software.

I will never buy another Western Digital HD for as long as I live. I am on my third warranty replacement and the OS reports it is failing also.

The Western Digital HD which keeps failing has been tracked back to Western Digital themselves. It seems everytime they replace it they do not replace it with a "New" drive. They replace it with a remanufactured drive that someone else sent in as defective. Therefore if get one that is junk the odds are the replacement will be junk. They have freely admited that this is their general practice.

I can't use what I have right now. The hard disk is failing and about to crash the system.

I don't feel that anyone has answered my question.
I could try Norton Ghost, but if Fox is right and it won't recognize a transfer from EIDE to SATA then it is worthless to me.

Since the person who suggested the other program hasn't offered additional help when I edited my question I won't take the risk of downloading an unknown from the internet.

you can not Ghost(clone) the IDE OS to SATA OS HDD. it has different interface. and the Norton Ghost will not recognize the drive. the Ghost program only can be done by IDE to IDE or SATA to SATA

they best thing to protect all your data is to have raid 1 (mirror), used two HDD same size. the function creates an exact copy to both driver. for instance, once you have created raid 1, the drive will be seen only one physical drive.
in the future, if you had HDD failed, on windows or post screen will warned you and all u need to do just replace the bad drive and then rebuilt the raid.

use what you have right now, window vista coming out on Jan 9 2007.

I have never had a problem with WD HD, but to do what you want to do, the only way to do it is to create an image of your computer and then you can put it to the new hard drive.

Nortorn ghost is a program that will do this.

It seems there is something else that is causing your HD to go bad. Maybe your pc is getting too hot. I have had a HD fail due to this and had to replace it.

Norton Ghost is pretty much designed for that purpose. You can either buy it or find it through the usual channels.

Basically it makes a disk image of the drive (kind of like an iso) including the OS, registry, etc, then you can 'restore' that image to another drive. It works pretty well.

I use a IDE to usb adapter I got off of ebay to do stuff like this. Kinda pricey if ya only need it once. Comes in handy if ya do it a bunch.
