Of course we can. It just takes both sides being civil. I have quite a few liberal friends. They are very decent people. They have a different outlook than I do, but generally want the same things.
Liberals accuse conservatives of being uncaring for the poor. Conservatives believe that we as individuals have an obligation to care for those in need. Liberals think that if the state doesn't take care of them, they will starve. So the conservative sees the liberal as a bleeding heart.
The liberal can't understand why the conservative oppose "gun control", unless he is so selfish about his rights, that he doesn't care about crime. The conservative looks at gun control as having firearms controlled by the politicians, whom he doesn't trust, as well as leaving himself defenseless.
The liberal sees some groups of people as disadvantaged and thinks that the conservatives want them held down. The conservative sees people as individuals and doesn't want one group favored at the expense of the other.
We all want things to be right, but we have different ideas about how to achieve this things.

Liberal radio talk show hosts are by far the worst and most exposed. Randi Rhoads and Al Franken can not be touched as far as being just plain nasty. When people have no logical or rational argument or point to make they revert to name calling or character assassination. It is easy to see why Air America could not get a following on the AM radio dial. You can cry all day that so and so is bad and this policy is bad, but when you don't offer an alternative or solution your history.

I would gladly debate anyone on this site. I try to be intelligent in my questions, but I can't always be in my responses. I have a problem dealing with stupid people, and therefore I sometimes get inflamed. However, I try to do my best. I wish more people on here would do the same.
Honestly, it seems like neo-cons, as a whole, are the worst about it. Liberals are just slightly better.
Conservatives and liberals that actually choose to think about their support for issues are a completely different story and can have intelligent discussions.

We had darned sure better learn to do just that. This nation will not began moving forward again until we end the divisiveness and move together. I am a liberal. I will never agree with all of the issues the conservatives believe in. However, government works through discourse, negotiation and compromise. I fully well realize that. We must stand together. Otherwise this nation will continue to fall apart.

I don't think anyone who resides in the camp of extremism can function in an intelligent and responsible manner. I have noticed a return to being moderate, among Democrats and Republicans alike. You won't see much of it on YA, but it's apparent to see if you pay attention to what's happening in Washington. The moderates gave the mid-terms to the Democrats because they feared the one party strangulation being applied to the war and in Washington in general. Have heart, I think a lot of us are noticing a shift to the middle, and with all of our problems, the middle is where we all need to meet.

i in my view relish readin information from MSN and Yahoo. It makes for super leisure. I purely attempt to not purchase into each thing they are asserting. yet often while i choose a greater super selection of information, I song in to Fox. yet i don't blame the media, or call anyof them undesirable names. I blame the stupid those that have confidence each thing that's mentioned.

That will be the day.
There are some folks on here who are into intelligent discussion rather than personal insults. I try to answer their questions in a thoughtful and respectful manner.

Good grief, girl - there's no logic on YA! ;)
I do agree with you - it's pretty sad when we're reduced to "Democrats are better because..." "No, Republicans are better because...."
"Once people come down off their strident, nationalistic right-wing high horse, anything is possible" Gee, I've *never* met a liberal on a high horse..... /sarc Come on, CB - that was a cheap shot.

Proabably not. People get passionate about an issue that they believe they're right about. They don't think about other people's different perspectives or their feelings. They probably get frustrated and run out of things to say, so they resort to name calling. It's like watching little kids fight. Little kids don't always control their emotions and they also don't always have the vocabulary to get their point across. So they resort to name calling. Little kids can't find common ground and neither can adults sometimes.
